This varies based on material type and amount. All waste is handled legally and sent to hazardous waste sites.
- Management Survey – the standard survey to locate ACMs that could be disturbed during normal occupation and routine maintenance.
- Refurbishment / Demolition Survey – required before any construction, refurbishment, or demolition work to locate all ACMs in the affected area.
The duty holder (usually the building owner, landlord, or facilities manager) is legally responsible for managing asbestos risks and arranging surveys.
A full survey isn’t required regularly, but any known or suspected ACMs should be inspected and their condition reviewed at least once a year. Re-inspections or updates may be needed if the building changes or work is planned.
Finding asbestos doesn’t always mean removal is necessary. If it’s in good condition and not at risk of disturbance, it can often be managed safely in place through monitoring and labelling. Removal or encapsulation may be required if it’s damaged or likely to be disturbed during refurbishment or demolition
The duration depends on the building’s size, age, and complexity. A small property may take just a few hours, while a large commercial site could take several days.
Any non-domestic building built before the year 2000 may contain asbestos and requires an assessment. Domestic homes don’t legally require surveys unless being refurbished or demolished, though it is strongly advised.
